MP backs biodiesel tax break campaign

29 June 2011

Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George is backing a project to keep tax breaks for business who produce biodiesel.

Producers converting cooking oil into biodiesel currently gain from a 20p differential but that is due to end next April.

The St Ives MP, who leads the Lib Dem Environment Team, has been with the UK sustainable biodiesel alliance.

Mr George said "a number of small organizations in Cornwall currently make cash from used cooking oil".

He included: "In order to be able to get this sort of industry going it does require just a bit of lift which can be found in the kind of tax foregone."

Biodiesel is a mix of standard diesel, rapeseed and vegetable oils.
